| Policy |
| |
All
purchases of University-logoed apparel utilizing the small order
procedure (P-Card or check request) must be made from University-licensed
vendors. Orders for such apparel must be approved in advance
and in writing by the University’s Trademark Licensing
Office. For
the purposes of this policy, “apparel” is any
item worn by an individual including, but not limited to,
shirts, pants, headwear, footwear and outerwear. “Logoed”
refers to any verbiage and/or designs that are affixed to
the apparel by means of any process, including, but not limited
to, screenprinting, sewing, heat transfer and embroidery.
|
| Logoes |
| |
The
term “logo” refers to both graphic and word marks,
including the various names of the University. A complete list
of these may be found elsewhere on this site. Apparel with any
type of logo on it, University or otherwise, must be reviewed
under this process; the approval form will indicate whether
the order has to be placed with a UNC Licensee. |
| Royalties |
| |
Normally
manufacturers of logoed apparel pay a royalty that is used to
provide general financial aid to UNC students and, to a lesser
extent, support for the Department of Athletics. If the procurement
process is being used to purchase apparel for resale (including
resale within a University department) then royalties are due.
Otherwise, the vendor does not have to pay the royalty, and
the price to the University should be three to five percent
less. |
| Procedure |
|
The
successful outcome of this procedure is a document authorizing
the purchase of the desired apparel, with instructions regarding
licensure, royalty status and possibly other information related
to logo usage. The following steps are involved:
1. Develop
the design: See the Stylesheet section of this website for
general guidelines on design. Ideas or concepts may be given
informally to the Licensing Director to get a feel for where
they will end up. Computer images are available from Trademarks
and Licensing.
2. Submit
the design to Trademarks and Licensing by email, fax or letter
with the following information
Your
name and contact information
Department
purchasing the apparel
Type(s)
of apparel being purchased
Picture
of the logo and its placement on the apparel
Potential
vendor(s)
3. Licensing
will provide you with written approval, or with information
as to why the request was not approved.
4. Order
the apparel from an approved vendor.
